If you’re investing in dental implants to replace your lost teeth, you’re making an excellent decision. A dental implant is the next best thing to a real tooth because it is the only treatment to mimic both the root and the crown. This requires a titanium post to be surgically placed into your jaw to serve as a new root. Although you’ll need to have surgery, it’s worth it to treat your tooth loss permanently. Don’t worry about the road ahead. Here are 4 tips to help you prepare for your dental implant placement surgery.
1. Meal Prep
You’re not going to feel like doing too much for a few days, but you still need to eat. However, your implant dentist will tell you to stick to a liquid diet for 1-2 weeks. Make sure your fridge is well-stocked with plenty of nutritious foods, like soups, yogurt, and smoothings. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. However, don’t drink anything using a straw because it can interfere with healing.
2. Plan Relaxing Activities
You must take it easy for a couple of days. Boredom can set in quickly if you aren’t prepared. Plan some relaxing activities to keep you occupied, like reading a book, building a puzzle, or even catching up on your favorite Netflix series.
3. Arrange Transportation
Your implant dentist will use sedation or anesthesia to keep you comfortable during your placement surgery. It can take a few hours for the effects to wear off, so you’ll need a friend or loved one to take you home. They should stay with you for 24 hours. You mustn’t drive, operate heavy machinery, or make important legal decisions until any medications wear off.
4. Wear Comfortable Clothing
Choose a loose-fitting outfit that’s comfortable. Avoid any tight clothing. You may want to bring a light sweater because some dental practices can be a bit chilly.
In no time at all, you’ll be one step closer to a complete, beautiful smile. Your implant dentist will review any additional aftercare instructions with you before you go home, like how to manage pain. Take a prescribed or OTC pain reliever to keep you comfortable. Applying cold compresses can help with pain, inflammation, and bruising. It’s important to keep your mouth clean and avoid smoking.
In a couple of weeks, your gums will be healed, but it will take several months for your jawbone to integrate with your post. After osseointegration is complete, you’ll be scheduled for the restoration phase of your treatment plan.
Don’t hesitate to ask your dentist any questions before your surgery. They’ll give you the answers you need to calm any anxiety.
