Year after year, veneers are one of the most sought-after cosmetic dentistry treatments – it’s not hard to see why either! In addition to being incredibly customizable and extremely lifelike, they can last for 20+ years. However, as durable as veneers are, it is possible for them to fall off. If you find yourself in this situation, here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind until your appointment.
Don’t Panic
Whether you’re out at dinner with friends, at the office, or enjoying an evening at home, your first reaction may be to panic when your veneer pops off. However, it’s important to take a deep breath and get the process of getting the treatment you need in motion. The first step? Locate the veneer and place it in a plastic bag (or small container if you have one). If you can’t find it, don’t fret – your dentist can provide you with a replacement.
Do Call Your Dentist
From a veneer that’s popped off to a toothache, your first call should always be to your dentist. Once their dental team has a better understanding of your situation, they can walk you through the next best steps, including coming in for an appointment. (Even if your veneer pops off during non-business hours, your dentist’s office might have specific instructions on their voicemail for you to follow in the meantime).
Don’t Glue the Veneer Back On
When your veneer comes off, you may be tempted to remedy the situation on your own by using a household item, like superglue. However, not only will this damage your veneers, but using items with non-ADA-approved ingredients can wreak havoc on your oral health as well. Therefore, it’s best to practice patience and wait for treatment from your dentist.
Do Exercise Caution
Whether you have a few hours until your appointment or a couple of days, make sure to exercise caution when eating or drinking. It’s natural to experience some sensitivity, so limit your consumption of hot and cold foods and beverages. You should also chew on the opposite side of your mouth since your tooth may be a bit weaker without the veneer to protect it.
Having a veneer come off can cause your heart to race. However, by following the above tips, you’ll have a beautiful, complete smile again in record time!
